We now have the technology to reach nearby planets. Even though many long-term technical issues still need to be solved to create the conditions for a permanent, self-sustaining human presence on another planet, imagining humans as a multi-planetary species is no longer mere fantasy. Against this backdrop, the publication Planetary Echoes focuses on our imagination of life on other planets in the arts, literature, and sciences at the beginning of the 21st century, attempting to integrate the discourse into the very fabric of society today and connect artistic research and the abstract theoretical sciences on an international level.

Inspired by the Orléans Biennale d’Architecture’s title Walking Through Someone Else’s Dream, the Sleepwalker Archive understands itself as an artistic research and associative work; one that is broad in its reach and original in its insights. It curates, archives, copies, combines, and compiles ideas, texts, and images in a cut-up technique to create new and surprising narratives.The curious and at times bewildering juxtapositions, do not only provide a dream-like quality to the collaged collection of styles and genres, histories and ctions, images and texts. Rather, both the collection and its accompanying cut, allow a multiplicity of interpretations and entry points. Hereby the cut-up acts as a combinatory work that explicitly locates the creative act in the process of assembling, grouping, and displaying vast amount of content of the most diverse type and descent. The cut-up, analogous in many senses to the dream itself, is a radical, amplified and to an extent absurd, satirical and at the same time entirely serious, representation of reality itself.
Frei Otto: Denken in Modellen/Thinking by Modeling

In the 1950s, Frei Otto’s tent structures left their mark on the horticultural shows of the new Bonn Republic; together with Behnisch & Partner he created the roof landscape for the Munich Olympic Games in 1972. The innovative potential in his work is based on the interdisciplinarity of a mode of thinking that took in architecture, technology, art, science, and society. He saw nature as a model and tried throughout his life to harness it for the sake of architecture and civil engineering—and thus also for the future. The Frei-Otto Archive features a large number of experimental models. The book will come out in two editions (German and English) and will be the first time Frei Otto’s models have appeared in print. The book is being published in conjunction with the most extensive exhibition to date of the work of Frei Otto at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe in association with the Wüstenrot Foundation. The exhibition will open in autumn 2016.
Memories of the Moon Age/Der Traum von der Reise zum Mond

Long before scientists took the possibility of travelling to the Moon seriously, virtually all of its aspects had already been explored in art and literature. Our nearest astronomical neighbour, the Moon—just three days journey by spacecraft—still serves as an object of creative projection and speculation for visionaries across the globe. More than five decades after the first moonwalk, the book «Memories of the Moon-Age» traces a visual cultural history of lunar exploration in snapshots from the past, present, and future. This inspiring journey through history ranges from Ptolemy’s early calculations of the distance from the Earth to the Moon and Galilei’s invention of the telescope and his pen drawings of the lunar surface to the golden age of space travel in the mid-twentieth century with Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and the concrete preparations for the Apollo Moon landing.

Speculations Transformations is devoted to the social and spatial changes that Germany will face in the future. Considerations and contributions by renowned researchers, professionals and thinkers such as Thomas Auer, Armen Avanessian, Stefan Bergheim, and Matthjs Bouw map out potential future scenarios. Thought-provoking ideas, insightful interviews, data analyses, and reflections are accompanied by maps, illustrations, and photographs.
Based on the examination of current challenges, the publication explores patterns of possible transformations, interdisciplinary interpretations and prospective opportunities—taking into consideration the perspective of time and space as well as the people living in and therefore shaping urban and rural regions. Speculations Transformations helps open up new directions in the design of German cities and landscapes.
